Diane won first place in the Columns Category at the 2013 Canadian Church Press Awards. The award was given based on three of her stories, which were published in Faith and Friends, a publication of The Salvation Army. The judge said the following about her work:
“These vignettes of family life are almost mirrors of what must happen in any other household – which is what makes them such compelling reading. I’m sure I’m not the only parent who’s exchanged notes with our kids, tried to mitigate Monopoly-fueled bickering and picked dandelions when we should have been doing something else. The writer’s choice to shine the light on her own family makes it easy for me – and I’m sure lots of other readers – to just dive right in. What I especially appreciate here is how the writer always manages to find the teachable moment, the lesson – for her kids as well as for herself – that we all need to take away from what others might otherwise deem a mundane moment. Nothing mundane here: her kids are learning, and so are we.”
